I have heartburn every time I see an article on the main-stream financial press advising people that they need to work 30 years until they can retire. This blog is about your right to a mid-life crisis, and to do something completely different. It’s exhilarating to think about! Mid-Life Crisis and Early Retirement I just don’t want so much of it! I don’t know what I will do after our South American Gap Year is over. At any rate, I have no desire to completely quit work. But, not so much where I live in California. I have enough money for independence in some less expensive places. I myself am not yet quite financially independent. This blog is about financial independence, and what you can do to achieve it. Our side businesses did more than anything else to show me the possibilities in life, to set my priorities straight, and to put me on the path to financial freedom. We eventually started making a substantial side income of $30,000 – $40,000 per year selling on the internet. Over time, our first side hustle turned into another one, and then another one. We initially sold wedding crafts on the internet. For the first 3 years, we worked most nights and weekends.

My wife and I started our first side business when we were in our early 30s, with two young kids at home, while I was working beyond full time at a giant tech company. I have a few new perspectives to help me cope. Believe it or not, my return to work has gone pretty well. We returned to the USA in July 2018, and I immediately got right back to sitting in a chair under the cold blue light of a computer screen, this time at a new company in a new job. After 15 years sitting in a chair in Silicon Valley, my family and I declared our freedom, and headed to South America for a “Family Gap Year.” We home-schooled the kids (5th & 6th grade at the time), and we saw as much of the continent as we can from our base in a small pueblo in Southern Bolivia. Our bodies were not meant to sit in cubicles for decades. I wanted to find out what happens beyond the cold blue light of the computer screen.

In 2017, I quit my perfectly good corporate accounting job, and took a year long sabbatical off the grid in South America with my family. That’s me, Jojo Bobo, dropping another blog post! A Family Gap Year
